The film has been described as a thematic sequel to the 2000 film Unbreakable.^[3]Principal photography began on November 11, 2015, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The film premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2016 and will be released on January 20, 2017, by Universal Pictures.

Plot

Kevin (James McAvoy), a man with 23 different personalities, abducts three teenage girls. As the girls are held captive, they begin to meet the various personalities that reside within their captor, including a sophisticated woman and a nine-year old boy. The nightmare truly begins when Kevin’s 24th personality, an entity known as the “Beast”, begins to materialize.

Kevin ( James McAvoy), um homem com 23 personalidades diferentes , sequestra três adolescentes. Como as meninas são mantidas em cativeiro, elas começam a conhecer as várias personalidades que residem dentro de seu captor, incluindo uma mulher sofisticada e um menino de nove anos de idade. Production

On August 26, 2015, it was announced that M. Night Shyamalan would next direct a thriller film based on his own script, which would star Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.^[5] Shyamalan would also produce the film along with Jason Blum and Marc Bienstock.^[5] On October 2, 2015, James McAvoy was cast in the film to play the lead, replacing Phoenix.^[6] On October 12, 2015, Anya Taylor-Joy, Betty Buckley, Jessica Sula, and Haley Lu Richardson were added to the cast.^[7] On October 27, 2015, Universal Pictures came on board to release the film and titled it as Split.^[8]

Principal photography on the film began on November 11, 2015 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.^[9]^[10] Reshoots occurred in June 2016.^[11]Split is Shyamalan’s longest movie to date.

Release

Split had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 26, 2016.^[12] It also screened at the AFI Fest on November 15, 2016.^[13]^[14]

The film is scheduled to be released on January 20, 2017 in United States and Canada.^[15]

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 81%, based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1/10.^[16] Metacritic reports an average score 75 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”.^[17]

Jordan Hoffman of The Guardian gave the film 4 stars out of 5, stating it to be a “masterful blend of Hitchcock, horror and therapy session.”^[18]
